The richness of today's Coconut Grove can only be understood by taking a look at its intricate past. Cocoanut Grove, as it was named by Horace P. Porter when he established its first post office back in 1873, actually saw its first settlers as far back as the 1830s. Bahamian pioneers settled along Charles Avenue in the 1880s. Its first hotel, the Peacock Inn, attracted a great number of scientists, writers and other intellectuals, as well as nobility, many of whom decided to make Coconut Grove their new home. The expansion and prosperity of this new community and the warm winters awoke the curiosity of many wealthy Northerners, who built their winter residences here.
Today, the relaxed atmosphere, the lush landscape and the serene beauty of the bayfront are ideal sources of inspiration for any artist. Coconut Grove was known as an artists colony and it still maintains much of that same casual feeling. Coconut Grove has successfully mixed and matched intellectuals, investors, settlers, bohemians, artists and patrons for decades. This rich heritage is the fertile soil where Coconut Grove thrives today.
